How to Get Rid of Chiggers

Posted on December 3, 2017December 7, 2020 by Lawrence Saucedo

Usually, the smallest of creatures can cause become the biggest nuisance. Chiggers thrive in moist, wooded areas – and once you’ve been bitten, you know you don’t want it to happen again. Do you know how to get rid of chiggers when they’re around your property, or once they’ve taken a bite out of your skin?

Chiggers can be nasty little bugs, and their tiny size makes them hard to see. Because chiggers like to “hang out” in shady, weedy areas, keep your lawn and landscaping well-trimmed and neat. Eliminate standing water (which will draw chiggers as well as other pests) by ensuring every area of your property has proper drainage. If you want to know how to get rid of chiggers, the first step is in maintaining a neat, healthy, and dry lawn.

Because chiggers are hard to spot and very difficult to completely get rid of, you may want to take some protective measures against chigger bites. If you’ve ever wondered how to get rid of chiggers, then you already know how nasty and itchy a chigger bite can be. Wear bug sprays and repellents to keep chiggers from being attracted to you, and try to avoid overgrown, shady places where they live. When outside, use bug repellent candles or other products to keep insects away. Remember, the natural habitat of chiggers is simply the outdoors. Even when you know how to get rid of chiggers, you won’t be able to get rid of all the chiggers in the world. You may still run into them from time to time, so protect yourself from their sting.

Once you know how to get rid of chiggers, and how to protect yourself against them, you can enjoy the outside of your home as well as the inside. Chiggers may be nasty little pests, but once you know how to take care of them they aren’t so much of a problem anymore. And if you do suffer from a chigger bite, remember not to scratch it and use rubbing alcohol to take the sting (and potential) infection out of the area. Try using cold water to cool off the skin, and remember to use repellents so chiggers and other insects won’t be attracted to your skin.
